I was present at the creation!

On April 20, 1977, I had been hired as the new director of the Fairfield County Library, although I did not begin working full-time until May 15, 1977.  One of my first activities as I started my new job was to work with a group of people who were interested in forming a Friends of the Library organization for the Fairfield County Library.
As the Friends' group developed, I found it exciting and reassuring to me, as a new director,  that so many people in our county cared about good library service and in turn were willing to give of their time and money to benefit the library.  Those twin roles of the Friends --advocacy and financial support--have continued to benefit the Fairfield County Library through all 25 years of the organization's existence.
Advocates who speak up for the library and promote its services keep our funding sources, both local and state, aware of the importance of the library to our community and aware of the needs the library has.

Financial support from the Friends has allowed the library to purchase materials, offer programs, and provide services that would not have been covered in our regular operating budgets.

The 25-year's-worth of people who have served the Friends of the Library as presidents, board members, committee chairs, and members have enriched my life as a librarian.  Thank you all for your participation over the years...and may our next 25 years be just as productive!

As always, feel free to reach me at the library by phone(635-4971) or by email (sarah@fairfield.lib.sc.us.)
