Compliments of the Friends of the Library

Jan/Feb/Mar, 2000

Library Receives Grant From Gates Foundation
The Fairfield County Library was one of forty-five counties in South Carolina to benefit from a statewide grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation last year.

A major goal of the Gates Foundation is to eliminate the "digital divide" by providing computer equipment and software for public access computers in rural and low-income areas.  Fairfield County Library's $21,198.00 grant was based on our total population and the percent of our population below the poverty level.

The Main Library in Winnsboro received four computers, a server, and a network printer.  The Ridgeway Branch Library qualified for two computers and one printer.  Each computer came Internet-ready and loaded with software programs for children and adults.

Children's software programs include such popular characters as Barney and Arthur. Creative Writer is a word processing and publishing program for children.

Adults now have access in the library to Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel, and Powerpoint programs.

Reference software for all ages includes Encarta Encyclopedia, Encarta Africana, Encarta Visual Globe, Encarta Bookshelf, and Expedia Streets.
